MEMORANDUM FOR Inbound Joint and Combined Warfighting School Students

SUBJECT: Students Welcome Letter

1. On behalf of the Commandant, staff, and faculty, welcome to the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS) at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC). JCWS prepares officers to assume positions as joint planners on a Combatant Command, Service Component Command, or Joint Task Force staff, and satisfies the requirements for Joint Professional Military Education Phase II. You should expect a rigorous and challenging academic program that will expand your understanding of joint operations.

2. The JCWS program uses small seminar instruction and practical exercises to teach students how to think as opposed to what to think. Our goal is to graduate individuals capable of applying the enduring principles of joint planning across the full spectrum of the ever-changing security environment. The JCWS curriculum focuses on four broad areas: strategy, operational capabilities and functions, the joint planning process, and the contemporary operating environment. You will study these from the combatant commander or JTF perspective, and the course of instruction will include not only joint doctrine as it is written today, but also many of the emerging joint concepts that will become doctrine in the years ahead. The College’s guest speaker program includes many of today’s military and civilian leaders and offers a unique learning opportunity for our students. We have also integrated senior mentors (retired 3 and 4 star officers and ambassadors) into the curriculum, providing role players with years of real world joint and interagency experience. The last piece of the educational process is you, the student. You and your classmates bring a wealth of experience to the classroom that will significantly enhance the academic discourse and add context to the learning experience.

3. We look forward to seeing you and extend our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful assignment. Please register as soon as possible via our website at www.jfsc.ndu.edu. Upon arrival you will receive a student guide with additional details. If we can assist you in any way, do not hesitate to contact the JFSC Registrar & Personnel Services office at registrar@jfsc.ndu.edu or DSN 646-6124/34 or COMM (757) 443-6124/34.
