Prerequisites for JCWS:

  • Commissioned officer, Grade O-4 and above or Senior enlisted (grades E7-9)† or U.S. Government civilian personnel of equivalent rating
  • Assigned or en route to a joint duty assignment or equivalent
  • Have credit for Phase I from an Intermediate Service School or an approved equivalent*
  • Selected by individual Service, country, or non-DOD agency
  • Current Secret clearance (more...)
  • Completed Bachelors Degree**

Note 1: *For U.S. officers: On rare occasions, the JPME 1 completion requirement can be waived via Direct Entry Waiver in accordance with CJCSI 1800.01C (Officer Professional Military Education Policy). Waiver must be submitted with nomination package to Service JPME II POC and waivers must be approved before enrollment. Civilians without Phase I and officers on a Direct Entry Waiver must complete the preporatory Joint Transition Course before JCWS.
**Can be waived for International Officers.

Note 2: For Civilians Only: Civilians must be nominated by first Flag/General/SES Officer in their chain-of-command; include this nomination memo in package along with a one-page student biography or resume to include education and career history and their undergraduate transcript. If the nominee has not completed JPME Phase 1, they will need to attend the prerequisite five-day Joint Transition Course (JTC) the week prior to JCWS start date. The standard time frame for submitting applications is NLT 90-days prior to class start date. Final admissions authority rests with the JFSC Commandant.

Note 3: † For U.S. Senior Enlisted: A recent change to the NDU Size and Composition of JPME courses approved by the Director, J7, authorizes select senior enlisted members to participate in JCWS and AJPME. Senior enlisted prerequisites for JCWS and AJPME:

  • Senior enlisted (grades E7-E9) - "Functional area specialists" consistent with joint planning groups (occupational specialties: operations; intelligence; communications; logistics; etc. (JPG: see JP 5-0 and/or JP 1-02);
  • In the first year of (365 days), or en route to, a joint assignment or equivalent;
  • Bachelors degree (accredited);
  • Service professional military education (PME) complete for pay grade;
  • JPME I credit from an Intermediate Service School or attend Joint Transition Course one week prior to JCWS);
  • SEJPME Course (JFSC distance education course) completed;
  • Current secret clearance;
  • Selected by individual Service / endorsed by first GO/FO in chain of command/endorsed by Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman (SEAC);
  • Nomination package submitted 90 days prior to class date to JFSC Dean Academic Affairs (DAA).

NOMINATION PROCEDURES FOR SENIOR ENLISTED

Senior enlisted must be nominated by first flag/general/SES officer in their chain-of-command; include this endorsement memo in the nomination package along with a one-page student biography or resume to include education and career history and their undergraduate transcript. If the nominee has not completed JPME Phase 1 they will need to attend the prerequisite five-day resident Joint Transition Course (JTC) the week prior to JCWS or AJPME start date(s). Additionally, prior to attending JTC the Senior Enlisted JPME (SEJPME) Course (JFSC distance education course) must be completed (copy of completion certificate in package). The standard time frame for submitting applications is NLT 90-days prior to class start date. Final admissions authority rests with the JFSC Commandant.
