This lesson describes the organizational structure of the national military establishment, the chain of command from the President and the Secretary of Defense to the combatant commands and command relationships to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other support authorities.  Students will be introduced to the operational and organizational policies and procedures for exercise of command by combatant commands and other joint force commands.

NOTE: In a  memo date 11 Jan 2002, the Secretary of Defense directed that use of the term “National Command Authority” be discontinued.  The Term CINC, except in reference to President, was eliminated in Nov 2002. It has been deleted from this briefing.
